It’s Volunteers’ Week – thank you to our wonderful volunteers for your support

It is Volunteers’ Week (2nd – 8th June 2025) and we want to thank our lovely volunteers for your support – helping us provide information and services to unpaid family and friend carers. We will always welcome more volunteers, so if you have some time to spare either regularly or occasionally, please get in touch with our Volunteer Team.

Julie Hayes, our Hubs and Volunteer Co-ordinator, said: “We have a wonderful team of hard-working, friendly and dedicated volunteers, many have a caring role. Our volunteers help us provide support to family and friend carers in Hertfordshire, ensuring they are identified, informed, supported and heard.”

For Volunteers’ Week we are celebrating and thanking our volunteers with a lunch on Monday 2nd June and we will have a stand at two Volunteer Fairs as we are looking for more people to volunteer with us.

We will be at Broxbourne Borough Volunteers Fair, at the Laura Trott Leisure Centre, Cheshunt, on Thursday 5th June 2025, 12.30pm-2.30pm. Communities 1st have partnered with Broxbourne Alliance PCN and Broxbourne Borough Council, bringing together local community groups and charities to showcase the work they do in the community and promote their currently available volunteering opportunities.

Then on Friday 6th June, we will have a stall at Hertfordshire Volunteer Fair in Hitchin High Street, 10am-3pm.

If you don’t already volunteer with us, but are interested in supporting us, your help is needed. Some of the roles can be done at home, such as providing telephone bereavement support and making Keep in Touch calls and others such as mentoring in person near to where you live or over the phone.

We are also looking for Hub Leaders or joint leaders for our carers’ groups in Berkhamsted and a group we are planning for Hitchin and helpers at our Bishop’ Stortford, Berkhamsted and Borehamwood groups.

Some of our volunteers have kindly shared their experience of volunteering with us.

Former Social Worker Mandi, who is a parent carer and has been an admin volunteer since February 2025, said, “I began volunteering to rebuild my routine and skills. I stopped working in 2016 to care for my child, but now they are older and more settled, I have time to volunteer. I assist in the office twice a week doing tasks such as answering calls and inputting data. I enjoy the role and everyone is friendly and helpful.”

Rumit, who has volunteered with us since December 2024, making welfare calls to carers, said: “After my father-in-law, whom I helped care for, passed away, I wanted to support other carers. It’s incredibly satisfying to provide information and a listening ear, reminding them they’re not alone. The role is flexible, and I can take breaks when needed.”
