Financial assistance

You may be able to receive help with the costs of a holiday. There are some organisations that GPs, health or care professionals and charities like Carers in Hertfordshire can approach, although there are likely to be conditions that apply. There are also some organisations and charities that carers can apply to themselves for help towards the cost of a break. Among these are:

Hertfordshire Convalescent Trust – provides grants for respite or holidays to low income Hertfordshire residents with an illness and disability and/or their family carers. You can apply direct or via an organisation supporting you or the person with the illness or disability. Call 01992 505886.

The Family Fund – provides grants towards the cost of holidays for low income families with a severely disabled child aged up to 18. The main carer and child with the disability must go on the holiday, but other family members can go too. The holidays are sourced through Inspire, which works with over 300 agencies and tour operators to find the break for you. You can learn more or apply by calling 01904 550055 or visit www.familyfund.org.uk

3H Fund – specialises in providing subsidised group holidays for people with physical disabilities or if funds allow it can provide grants to low income families with a disability. Call 01892 860207 or www.3hfund.org.uk for more information.

Holiday Checklist (a few things to consider)

  • You can have a four week break in any 26 week period and still be paid Carer’s Allowance if you receive this (although other criteria apply);
  • If you are travelling abroad and need prescribed medication check the rules for any countries you are visiting or passing through as they may have restrictions about the types of medication allowed in and the quantity.
  • If you’re going away with the person you care for contact the venue or public transport service that you may be using in advance about any assistance you may need or to ask about how they may help.

If you wish to discuss your caring role or having a break with or without the person you care for please get in touch with our Carer Support Advisors on 01992 58 69 69 (Monday to Friday).
