Unpaid carers who look after a relative or friend are delighted that we are planning on setting up a local support group for them.
Nearly 40 carers from Letchworth and surrounding towns attended our Information and Support event at the Mrs Howard Memorial Hall, Letchworth, on Thursday 19th May.
Carers could find out about services locally to help them with their caring role and shared ideas about what they would find useful from a peer support group.
They also got tips about relaxing and enjoyed a meditation session led by a yoga teacher from the Letchworth Centre for Healthy Living.
Alex Daar, our Projects Officer Caring Communities, said: “Carers value support and advice from other carers and want strong local services to help them in their caring role so Carers in Hertfordshire plans to launch a Carer Support Hub in Letchworth from September. Hubs give carers the chance to meet other carers, share views, and find out what help is available locally.”
She added: “It was great to welcome so many carers to our information event and hear from them about their needs, services or help they would like, and their views about how a hub may work for them. For many it was the first time they had been to one of our events. We will now go away and consider the feedback carers provided and plan when and where a monthly Letchworth Carers’ Support Hub could meet.”
David, who has been caring for various family members for 20 years, said: “The hub will give carers like me somewhere to go and meet other people. As a carer it can be difficult to get out and if you don’t have somewhere local to go, you end up staying at home, which can be lonely.”
Another carer Barbara said: “It was an excellent event and I made some new friends and exchanged numbers. I will come back to a group once it is set up.”
The Letchworth Garden City Hub is the eighth hub we are setting up as part of a Caring Communities Project thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund. We plan to have 16 hubs in Hertfordshire by 2019 so that carers have local networks of support.
