Mentoring

Regularly chat with someone who knows what caring means.

Our free mentoring service provides one-to-one support for unpaid cares with a trained volunteer Mentor who understands the challenges of caring.

Mentoring is a confidential, supportive relationship where a Mentor works alongside you (the Mentee) to explore concerns, build confidence, and identify practical ways to manage your caring role.

What is mentoring?

Mentoring offers emotional support, guidance, and practical signposting. Your Mentor will not tell you what to do; instead, they help you consider options and set realistic, achievable goals that feel right for you. Many Mentors have personal experience of caring, bringing empathy and insight to every session.

What can mentors help with?

You can talk about anything affecting you as a carer, including:

  • Stress, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Balancing caring with work or personal life
  • Accessing services, benefits, and local support
  • Building confidence, resilience, and self-esteem

Mentors are non-judgemental and objective, offering a safe space to talk openly.

How mentoring supports you

Sometimes it’s easier to speak to someone neutral. A Mentor will listen carefully, help you explore solutions, and support you to make your own decisions. Together, you can develop coping strategies or find ways to take breaks from caring and prioritise your wellbeing.

Where and how often will we meet?

Sessions are flexible and built around your needs. Typically, meetings take place weekly or fortnightly for around an hour in a mutually agreed public place, such as a café. Support can also be provided by phone, email, Zoom, or WhatsApp.

Our mentors

Our volunteer Mentors are carefully selected and fully trained, with strong listening skills and lived or relevant experience. We match you with a Mentor based on your needs to ensure the best possible support.

How long does mentoring last?

Mentoring usually lasts around six months, with the option to continue up to a year if helpful. Regular reviews ensure the support remains beneficial and tailored to you.

Confidentiality

Everything shared is kept confidential, except in rare circumstances where safeguarding concerns must be reported.
