Soteris’ Story

Soteris shares his story of caring for his elderly mum who has limited mobility.

Soteris, 54, lives with his mum, who he cares for full-time as she has complex mobility needs. Find out more about his caring journey.

“My mum, who is 81, relies on me for support as her right leg is paralysed and she is losing feeling in her left leg. I do the cooking and cleaning, and help with her personal care. I also take her to her hospital or other health appointments.

I first heard about Carers in Hertfordshire when I went to an event organised by Mind and met a social prescriber there. They gave me one of your leaflets, and that’s how I ended up getting in touch.

Getting support has helped a lot. I have been to a carers’ café and regularly go to one of your Hub groups. Just listening to other people’s stories makes a difference because you realise you are not alone.

One thing caring has taught me is patience. I want to help, but it’s not always easy, and I’ve had to learn to slow down and take things at a different pace.

If I could give one piece of advice to other carers, it would be to think about things from the perspective of the person you care for. Take the time to understand their needs and what’s important to them.”
