Sally shares her story of caring for her husband, and how Carers in Hertfordshire has supported her.
Sally, who has had a diverse and impactful career spanning science, healthcare, politics (as a councillor on various Hertfordshire councils), and farming, has been supporting her husband since 2017, when he was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He has since also developed Alzheimer’s disease. Here Sally shares her story.
“Before he became unwell my husband was a hardworking, intelligent engineer and farmer, whose world, apart from family, revolved around the outdoors, his animals and tractors. Now, in his diminishing world he has found solace in nature and he has been collecting leaves, stones, flint, acorns and fruit.
There is so much I could say about the challenges of his slow decline. I deeply relate to others who have experienced the sadness of living loss in a loved one. But what carries us forward are the quiet, thoughtful moments, ones that we never had time for in our busy former life. These moments give us a sense of worth and peace.
We don’t know what lies ahead, but the support from Carers in Hertfordshire has helped us navigate the health and social care system. That comfort and guidance gives me hope for a more balanced journey.”
