Malcolm’s Story

Malcolm shares some of his story of caring for his wife, who has dementia.

Malcolm, 81, from Welwyn Garden City, cares for his wife, who has been living with dementia for the past two years. While she remains independent with some daily tasks, such as dressing herself, Malcolm supports her with many aspects of everyday life and has adapted to the challenges of caring.

“Becoming a carer has meant learning new skills and adapting to her changing needs. For example, as her eating has become more difficult, I make sure the meals I prepare are suitable and easier for her to manage. I feel lucky, though, as we still share many of the same interests.

Connecting with Carers in Hertfordshire has also made a real difference to me. I attend one of the hub groups each month and really enjoy it. Everyone is friendly, and there’s always something new to learn from others who understand what caring is like.

My advice to other carers is to be patient and sympathetic. It’s important not to get angry, but instead to take a step back and try to see things from the other person’s point of view.”
