Maddie has only recently become aware that she is a carer for her father who she doesn’t live with. Maddie spoke with us about her caring journey.
“My father has dementia which fluctuates day by day and there are certain aspects of it which I am beginning to struggle with. It was only when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure that I realised what an impact this is having on me.
I would like to be able to have a break from the caring, even for just a few days, but to do this, I would have to arrange additional care for my father. I spoke with an agency but they said he would need a full reassessment before they could provide extra support. This would be very difficult as Dad would think I am trying to put him in a home, which could have a negative impact on our relationship.
I had an argument with a close family member and have not been in communication with them for a long time. I am beginning to reconnect with them and I can talk to them but it is early days.
When I called Carers in Hertfordshire, I spoke with an Advisor and she was excellent. She told me about the Admiral Nurse service and some dementia specific training courses which I could attend.
I was also referred for a Carer’s Assessment with Social Services, but as the date approached, I was becoming very anxious about it. I rang Carers in Hertfordshire and discussed what was involved and how it may be beneficial for me. I left the call feeling a lot calmer and ready to proceed with the assessment.”
