Ideas for things to do at home to keep occupied, calm and well, during the COVID-19 pandemic
Practising self-isolation and social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t have to mean social isolation or boredom. You could take time learning something new, doing some DIY or de-cluttering, or an activity you enjoy. Try and vary what you do and make time for yourself away from your caring role.
We’ve prepared examples of a few responsible activities you can do to stay occupied, calm and well, during this public health crisis. You may even be able to do some of the activities with the person you care for:

Other organisations may also have some craft ideas, especially in the run up to Christmas. Activity Village have created some colouring pages, colouring cards and Christmas puzzles that can be downloaded from their website. Although the activities are intended for care home residents, anyone can download them for free!
Try and maintain a routine, as far as possible, so wake up and go to bed at healthy times to ensure you get enough sleep and avoid falling into a cycle of sleeping, working, eating and repeating.
You should also try and stay connected to people, this could be by phone, email, social media, and through video messaging apps or programmes such as Skype and Zoom. If you don’t have family or friends you can speak to you can call emotional support lines like the Samaritans (call 116 123).
Our New Online Workshops
We are creating some free, online workshops and courses for you to view from home (or wherever you are). We have the following available:
An Introduction to Better Sleep - This is run over four parts and provides an introduction about what sleep is, why we need it, and what factors contribute to a good night’s sleep. It also includes an introduction to guided breathing exercises and relaxation. The learning time is around 30 minutes. Resilience Workshop - This is an online version of our popular resilience workshop and it is provided in six parts. Through the series, you can learn techniques to manage the everyday stresses of being a carer and get tips about building support networks and dealing with relationship changes. Dealing with Stress - Everyone lives with stress at some stage – and sometimes this can become overwhelming for a carer. This online workshop, a single video which lasts about half an hour, will talk through what the symptoms of stress are and suggest different ways of managing it. Managing Medication - This is a short workshop looking at some of the common questions and issues that people ask about medication being taken by the person they are caring for. Find out about side effects, storage, organisation and much more using an exercise that is taken from our Caring with Confidence course.
