Golfers are teeing up to support our work with carers thanks to Phil Popham, the new Captain of Broxbourne Seniors, choosing us as their Charity of the Year. This follows on from a partnership last year after 2016 Captain Danny Deveney also nominated Carers in Hertfordshire as the Charity of the Year.

As a result of the 2016 partnership £721 was raised throughout the year and on the Captain’s Day at Cheshunt Park Golf Centre in September 2016. A few people who play golf at the Centre have also now registered as carers thanks to the hard work Danny and his committee put in to promoting our work to support carers.

Current Captain Phil Popham said: “I decided to support Carers in Hertfordshire because the charity was helpful and supportive to me after my wife died in 2013. I had been caring for her for several years and the charity provided me with excellent bereavement support.”

He continued: “I’m looking forward to a busy and successful year as Captain and if carers or others want to join the club or our section, they can, as new members are always very welcome. Golf can be a great release for someone in a caring role as there is tremendous camaraderie and we support each other. Plus it is great exercise!”

Studies have shown that playing golf can reduce stress, improve mental and physical health, and help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease. It is also a social sport and can be enjoyed by people young and old.

To help raise funds and awareness the club has some of our leaflets and collection boxes on display and Phil is holding a Captain’s Day on September 11th 2017.

Linda Cudmore, our Community Fundraising Lead, said: “We are very pleased that Phil Popham has chosen to support carers during his year as Captain of The Broxbourne Seniors. This sustained support helps raise the profile of carers and will assist us in identifying even more in the Broxbourne area. Having visited the group I would highly recommend joining, as you will be guaranteed a warm welcome and possibly make good friends for life!”

The Broxbourne Seniors play out of Broxbourne Borough Council’s owned Cheshunt Park Golf Centre. Phil said that Senior club membership is very reasonably priced, but you can also pay and play if you only want to play occasionally or want to try the course out before becoming a member.
