Carers in Hertfordshire is working in partnership with POhWER, the advocacy agency, to provide advocacy services to the community. Our particular remit is to provide this service to carers. Advocacy supports people to speak up about what is important to them.

The Advocacy Service covers support and information where you are finding it difficult to understand the information and advice that has been provided by health or social care services or you are struggling to put your views across or where you don’t feel you are being listened to. If you need help to access services relating to your health, lifestyle or independence our Advocate can help you understand your rights and choices and get your voice heard.

Our Advocacy Service

Will Davis, is our Carers Advocacy Worker, and he covers the whole of Hertfordshire. He is managed by Roma Mills, Carers Policy and Engagement Manager.

What we do

Advocacy helps people to feel they are listened to and that they have a voice. We take time to get to know each carer accessing this service to understand their needs and what is at the root of their problems. We can provide them with the tools to communicate and we can spend this time with them – other services are unable to do so as it is not within their remit or they do not have the resources to do so.

We are accessible – we travel to people and meet them in locations convenient to them. Many carers have constraints on their time and therefore as a Community Advocate we can fit in around your day and meet with you at a time and place that is convenient to you. We are able to visit you in your own home.

We can:

  • Find out information for you so you are aware of your options and can consider them;
  • Empower you to understand your rights and entitlements;
  • Make telephone calls/write letters on your behalf;
  • Go to meetings with you, to help you decide what YOU want to happen; and
  • Signpost and introduce you to other more specialised services if required or more appropriate.

We can't

  • Tell you what to do, we are always led by the carer;
  • Give you legal or related advice;
  • Do anything without agreeing it with you first or discuss your business with anyone else unless you ask us to do so. However, we may not need your permission if we have safeguarding concerns and in this situation there are processes and procedures we must follow;
  • Go to meetings without you or instead of you.
  • Go with you if there is a court hearing.
