Hertford Rotary Club has produced a reverse advent calendar which encourages people to put small donations into an envelope most days in the run up to Christmas Day and will share money raised with our Young Rotary Club of Hertford Reverse Advent Calendar 2018 Carers Service and other charities.

Examples of requests on the calendars are:
• Good communications are essential. Put 20p in the envelope for every phone you have in your home; and
• Schools are vital for good learning. Give 10p for every place of learning you have attended.

Pam Caddow, Hertford Rotary Club’s Fundraising and Events Officer, explained that they have adapted the calendar from an idea from another Rotary Club and each completed calendar could raise around £12 to £15. The Club would also welcome donations if people did not want to follow the instructions.

Pam said: “At Christmas the Rotary Club of Hertford always tries to do something to support children's charities, ideally local ones. We have worked with Carers in Hertfordshire’s Young Carers Service in the past and have great pleasure in selecting them as one of two children's charities to benefit from this initiative. We recognise the exceptional work they do in supporting young carers and their families, making sure they have access to information and services to try and ease their caring role and improve their health and wellbeing. We hope that the calendars are a great success, promoting recognition of the work and dedication of all young carers.”

Laura Green, one of the Young Carers Service Team Leaders, said: “Young carers are likely to have more responsibilities than other children their age as they take on tasks to help around the home and provide emotional support to the person requiring care or siblings. We aim to reduce the young person’s caring role and provide opportunities for them to have fun, meet other young carers and build their skills and confidence.

She continued: “We appreciate the Rotary Club’s support as we depend on donations and grants to continue providing activities and services for young carers. If you want to get involved in this festive fundraising your donations will make a difference.”

A donation of £500 could help run an activity for up to 20 young carers to develop their skills and reduce isolation. Activities we have run in the past include first aid, mask making and preparing for secondary school.

If you would like the fundraising advent calendar or are a carer and want to know more about how Carers in Hertfordshire could support you call 01992 58 69 69 or email

Donations related to the calendar should be returned by Saturday 12th January 2018. The easiest way to pass on your donation is via cheque made payable to the Rotary Club of Hertford. You can send it to Carers in Hertfordshire, The Red House, 119 Fore Street, Hertford, Herts, SG14 1AX.
